About

Towards Trauma-informed Practice

Over-stretched services and much-reduced training budgets limit opportunities for professionals to absorb and incorporate new ideas into work practices.

You may have read the words of Bessel van der Kolk, Bruce Perry, Alfie Kohn etc. and nodded through Nadine Burke Harris’s TED talk and feel hugely frustrated by out-dated and ineffective ‘Old Authority’ responses to the dysregulation of the troubled children that you work with. We certainly are.

‘Rafting-up’ (instead of ‘silo-working’) is more important than ever. In this spirit of connected child-raising and collaborative working, Judith Staff Consultancy and NVRnorthampton have teamed-up to arrange a 2-day conference for education, policing, social care and mental health professionals to gather and connect in the company of two leading experts in translating trauma-awareness into trauma-informed practice. Karen Treisman (highly specialised Clinical Psychologist) and Mathew Portell (Principal at the acclaimed Fall Hamilton School in Nashville, Tennessee) will give you the information and guidance you need to promote working practises that reflect your growing awareness of the implications of childhood relational/developmental trauma.

Discussions will follow our film screening of Resilience and keynote speeches.  These will focus on defining mechanisms by which we can support each other in implementing these changes into our working practices into the future.

Day One* – Resilience Documentary and Dr Karen Treisman

10:00 - Introduction to our conference - Penny Ruth Willis

10.30 - 11.30 Resilience Movie Screening

11.30 - 12.15 Post-screening discussion led by Drs Karen Treisman and Hayley Singlehurst-Mooney

12.15 - 15.30 Dr Karen Treisman on Workplace culture change – issues and ideas

15:45 - 16:30 Panel discussion, reflecting upon the day’s learning and the ideas that have emerged.

*Refreshments available on arrival and throughout the day. Buffet Lunch will be served at 13:30

Day Two* – Principal Mathew Portell

10:00 - Principal Mathew Portell shares his experience of transforming his own school, equipping us with a clearer vision of a Trauma-informed School and practical, transferable methods to influence change in our respective work environments.

16:15 - 16:30 Closing; Mathew helps us each identify and commit to one clear action that could move our own workplace cultures towards trauma-informed practice.

*Refreshments available on arrival and throughout the day. Buffet Lunch will be served at 13:30

Whether you are a lead professional or a frontline worker in education, policing, social care or mental health services, our conference aims to make you aware of just how important you can be in effecting positive change for troubled and troubling children & young people.

6/12 hours CPD - certificates of attendance will be sent to attendees the week following the event
